A Seasoned, Dependable Wordsmith:
Nonfiction Books and Articles; Apps and Digital Content
Employee surveys happen every year at most companies. Reporting the results to the workforce is challenging for many reasons. When we got our data at the AT&T division where I managed employee communications, our passionate leadership team wanted to send a message that went beyond charts and promises: They wanted folks to understand that they got the message. This day-in-the-life approach used four fictional employees to illustrate the daily challenges our workforce faced. It not only sent the message to employees, it earned an ACE Award in a stiff regional competition sponsored by the New York Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators.
Planning a special edition of the company’s employee publication was my job when AT&T was ready to introduce our intranet to the firm’s employees. The “road trip” theme seemed appropriate, as"information superhighway" was a common way to refer to the internet then. In addition to planning the issue, I worked with our staff writers to dig into their assigned beats to find tidbits and destinations for our readers. This special issue was so popular with employees that it was reprinted, a rarity in employee communications. If that wasn’t enough, the International Association of Business Communicators gave the publication their highest honor: a Gold Quill Award.
